Stratton Faxon Fairfield Road Race attracts Record Crowd
4,000 Runner Limit expected to be reached well before race day!
June 15, 2009 Press Release
Fairfield: The 29th Annual Stratton Faxon Fairfield Road Races take place on Sunday, June 28, at Fairfield’s Jennings Beach. Featuring a half-marathon (13.1 miles), 5K (3.1 miles) and Kids Fun Run, the event has been hosted by the Fairfield Firefighters since its inception. This year the race field is limited to 4,000 runners, with nearly 3,500 already registered. The 4,000-runner limit is expected to be reached well before race day. Race Director Steve Lobdell states, “The race has seen tremendous growth. Last year’s race had a record crowd of 3,300 and this year entries are running over 50 % ahead of last year’s pace!”
This year’s event has exciting new additions. The race will now feature the ChronoTrack timing system. The disposable tag eliminates the need for several organizational choke points which allows athletes to spend more time focusing on their competition and less time waiting in lines. The D-tag is easy to attach to the shoe and is far lighter and less intrusive than other timing tags and chips. In addition to the new timing system, all half- marathon finishers will be receiving finishers’ medals.
As always, runners will enjoy bands along the race course, sports massage, and a post-race beach party featuring food, refreshments, live music, and an awards ceremony. Shower facilities, baggage claim, and free parking are also available for participants. Technical running shirts will be giving to the first 3,700 entrants in the half marathon and 5K.
“We are very excited about the Fairfield races and are proud to support an event that gives back to the community,” said Michael Stratton, partner of Stratton Faxon. Sponsoring the race is part of Stratton Faxon's 10% philosophy. That is, that 10% of case fees are set aside to support charitable causes that help better the community or civil jury system.
Steve Lobdell also commented “With all our sponsors’ generous support, we can continue to put on a high-quality running event and raise even more money for charity." The Fairfield Road Races are a non-profit organization that, with the help of its participants, has contributed nearly $1 million to non-profit groups such as the Connecticut Burns Care Foundation's camp for severely burned children and other local charities. Lobdell states, "Without support from corporate sponsors, our event could not continue to donate thousands of dollars to these worthy causes." For the past two years the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has also used the Fairfield Road Races as one of their annual fundraising events.
